Status effects in Minecraft are a good or bad condition that affects players. They can vary in their effects, their duration, and the way they affect players. Bad Omen is a bad status effect that lasts a long time and is not directly harmful to players.

Minecraft Bad Omen
This status effect appears on players when they kill a Pillager Raid Captain or better known as Illager Captains.

Illager Captains appear in Illager Patrols, Woodland Mansions, Pillager Outposts, and in Raids. Upon killing one, a sign appears on the player's screen that shows a raging marauder with red eyes and two large axes.
This effect can only be applied to players or tamed wolves that kill the Marauder captain. In either case, the player gets the effect. However, other mobs do not get the effect when killing the captain.
Bad omen effects
When players obtain the Minecraft Bad Omen effect, they will trigger a Raid when they are near a village. The status effect can also be scaled with potency, from I to V. This determines the strength of mobs that spawn during the Raid.
At tier V on Hard mode, nearly 7-8 waves of mobs will spawn in a single Raid. Marauders, Vindicators, Ravagers, marauder captains and witches spawn during this and attack players who can villagers.
If the player successfully thwarts the looters' attempts to destroy the village, they will get the Hero of the Village effect which gives them a big discount on trades and also free items from the villagers.
But if the looters destroy the village, they dance for joy, jumping up and down, throwing their hands up.
Players can negate the effect by dying once or by drinking milk.
