Flying Machines in Minecraft: Everything Bedrock and Java Edition Players Need to Know

Flying machines are one of the coolest builds possible in Minecraft. They allow infinite flight and can be fully built in Survival mode.

Players looking to travel in a single direction without having to deal with the treacherous surface of Overworld are highly recommended to build a flying machine.

Although they are quite slow, flying machines allow for idle travel. This means the player can sit back and relax while the flying machine takes him to his destination.

Fortunately, flying machines are not very difficult to create in Minecraft.

Mechanics of flying machines in Minecraft

A flying machine created without observers (

Almost any player can build a flying machine in Minecraft due to its ease of creation.

In its most basic form, a flying machine consists of pistons, a few blocks of slime or blocks of honey, and blocks of redstone or spotters. Once activated, pistons will start pushing slimeblocks. The pistons facing the other way will pull the slime block towards you. This causes a state of perpetual motion for the flying machine.

Each piston has a boost limit of 14 blocks, which can be avoided by using honey blocks. Thus, honey blocks are needed for larger flying machines.

Players, blocks and most entities can be transported using flying machines as long as they are in a minecart or towed by honey blocks.

As soon as the flying machine hits an immovable block (like Obsidian), it will stop.
