GTA Online now has a special series of co-op missions starring Franklin and Lamar, with many references to their walking antics.
GTA Online's short travel tasks were previously only available to players who have completed all Contract missions, which is no easy feat (qualifications only, which include spending at least GTA$2 million on a new corporate building).
However, you can start playing with a co-op partner right now by going to the Jobs menu and selecting Short Trips. You'll also receive double GTA$ & RP prizes if you play through February 16th.

GTA Online Franklin Update:
As you play through the missions, you will briefly leave your own GTA Online character behind and take on the role of either Franklin or Lamar. They're much more communicative than the protagonist in GTA Online, and as you complete all three tasks, you'll learn more about their lives since getting caught with that dysfunctional but very ambitious heist team in 2013.
Put another way, Short Trips is the closest thing we'll get to an extension of GTA 5's narrative mode.
It's not quite what we expected when Rockstar first revealed GTA 5 single-player DLC in December 2013, but it's still nice to have - especially now that everyone can play.
