GTA 5 is shutting down for PS3 and Xbox 360

GTA 5 was released on September 17, 2013 for PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles. Since then, many have played on these consoles. They continued to be popular for their cheaper but powerful hardware, and among gamers who couldn't afford a brand new PS4 or Xbox One console. Rockstar recently announced that it will end support for GTA 5 on these older consoles. In this article, we will see more details about this announcement from Rockstar Games.

Since its release, GTA 5 Online has received multiple updates over and over again filled with content like cars, clothes, businesses, missions and heists. The enhanced version was released on November 18, 2014 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Shortly after that, Rockstar stopped updates for the older generation of consoles. The last update released on the PS3 and Xbox 360 was the Heists update. Players were now unable to experience new content, clothing, and cars on previous-gen consoles. they could, however, play and experience all other updates before that, actively queue up with friends and other players, earn money, and save their progress over playtime. An added benefit is that, unlike PS4, GTA 5 Online on PS3 does not require a service like PS Plus, thus making it free to play, similar to GTA 5 on PC.

Rockstar announced the expanded and enhanced versions of GTA 5 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. It featured many features such as 60FPS support and 4k resolution to name a few. The release is scheduled for November 11, 2021. Following this announcement, Rockstar has decided to end full support of GTA 5 Online for PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles. Players on these older consoles are now unable to play GTA 5 Online. They cannot earn money, add and play with friends, play heists or anything else that was previously available on this console. This is another small but impactful factor because the announcement of the Expanded and Enhanced version was controversial. Most players consider this announcement to be the end of an era. Looking at the success of GTA 5 over the years, this claim doesn't seem all that surprising.

The cause of the ad may have been cost savings. Rockstar Games may have decided that it's pointless to support older consoles and spend money to keep GTA 5 running on them, especially considering they stopped getting updates about 3 years ago.
