5 Times When The GTA Series Referenced a Popular Movie

Several GTA games have made numerous references to popular movies throughout the series.

Summary Five instances where the GTA series referenced a popular movie 5) Scarface and GTA Vice City 4) Work clothes are influenced by Friday the 13th part 3 3) A familiar truck chase scene 2) Menace II Society influencing GTA San Andreas 1) Thelma & Louise reference in GTA 5

Virtually every major video game franchise has fallen into one or two references to a few popular movies. It's nothing new, least of all when the GTA series does the same. However, there's always an element of surprise when it comes to which movie Rockstar might want to reference.

Some movie references are common knowledge. Everyone knows the obvious examples, but it's the mix between the well-known movie references and the more obscure ones that intrigues some players. Not everyone has watched these movies, so it's always important to remember this when discussing movie references.

Five cases where the GTA series referenced a popular movie

5) Scarface e GTA Vice City

GTA Vice City is a glaring example of a GTA game that references a movie. Practically every GTA Vice City fan already knows this, but that doesn't make the references any less interesting to know.

Some obvious examples of GTA Vice City referencing Scarface include:

  • Apartment 3C (Sunny Ray Hotel in Scarface)
  • Diaz's Mansion (Tony Montana's Mansion in Scarface)
  • Malibu Club (Babylon Club em Scarface)
  • The Right Room on the Vercetti Estate (Lopez's Office in Scarface)

Those aren't all examples either. Needless to say, GTA Vice City pays a great tribute to Scarface.

4) Work clothes are influenced by Friday the 13th, part 3

Tommy's outfit here looks familiar (

The Job is one of the most iconic missions in GTA Vice City. It's essentially a heist that concludes the entire Malibu Club storyline and makes it the most profitable asset in the entire game. However, it's not the gameplay that references Friday the 13th part 3.

Instead, it's the outfit Tommy and the gang wear. It's very similar to what Jason Vorhees wears in the movie, although the pants have been retouched to look different.

The movie was released in 1982, and GTA Vice City has a lot of references to 80s movies and TV shows.

3) A familiar truck chase scene

A similar one occurs in Terminator 2 (

Terminator 2 was released in 1991, a year before GTA San Andreas happened. In true Rockstar style, GTA San Andreas is heavily inspired by some of the most popular movies and TV shows of its era.

In the mission, Just Business, Big Smoke, and CJ are pursued by a horde of enemies, including one that is in a large truck. In either case, being in the sewers didn't help any of the characters get away from the enemies they were trying to escape.

2) Menace II Society influencing the GTA San Andreas

A GSF member remembers O-Dog (

It could be argued that Menace II Society is to GTA San Andreas what Scarface is to GTA Vice City. There are numerous references to the movie in GTA San Andreas, including the game's general gang warfare theme.

There's a GSF member who resembles O-Dog in GTA San Andreas, but that's not the only reference. The infamous passing scene at the end of Menace II Society is similar to that of The Introduction of GTA San Andreas, with the vehicle even looking like a Saber.

There is also a small reference at the beginning of the game where Ryder tries to steal the Well Stacked Pizza, only to be told that the clerk feels sorry for his mother. A similar scene takes place in the Menace II Society, except it's less comical.

GTA San Andreas takes place in 1992, while Menace II Society was released in 1993.

1) Thelma & Louise reference in GTA 5

Thelma & Louise is an interesting 1991 film about two female friends that eventually turns into a female crime film. The most iconic scene is where the iconic duo is cornered by police officers at the top of a canyon. Instead of being arrested or executed, the two decide to move on so they can die on their own terms.

GTA 5 has an almost identical scene, except it's just an easy-to-miss Easter egg. The full Easter egg can be seen in the video above, and it also involves two girls driving to their inevitable destination while on the run from law enforcement.

It only fires between 19pm and 20pm, so it's easy to miss (not to mention it only happens in a certain location).
