Apple has faced a judgment that threatens to overturn its tight control over the App Store, which makes billions of dollars each year while powering more than 1,6 billion iPhones, iPads and other devices. Epic, on the other hand, is an American video game and software developer and publisher based in Cary, North Carolina, also earning billions of dollars from its gaming procedures.

Fortnite was removed from the App Store in August 2020, when developer Epic Games added a new option to the in-game store that allowed players to purchase V-Bucks, the game's paid currency, directly from Epic.

Nvidia and Epic Games have both promised that Fortnite would return to iOS via GeForce Now running on the Safari browser since November 2020, when the service first launched on Apple hardware.

Apple and Google decided to cut 30% of total revenue from their app stores. But Epic Games decided to set up a different system for Fortnite where users could either pay Epic directly or choose to make a larger payment through the App Store.

Fortnite remains barred from Apple's App Store and may be unavailable natively on iOS for up to five years, according to Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney. According to Nvidia, beta sign-ups begin today, with "selected members" set to gain access in late January.

The company says the Fortnite beta will be a "limited time" process, but that "we don't have an exact timeline for how long it will last."
